What is macro synthetic fiber reinforcement?
Macro synthetic fibers are engineered polymer fibers distributed throughout a concrete mix. Their role in a project depends on the performance required after cracking and the approved structural design.
How do macro fibers work?
Once distributed through concrete, fibers can bridge cracks and contribute to residual flexural performance after the matrix cracks. Performance must be verified with the product's test data and the relevant design method.
Where are they used?
Floors, pavements, shotcrete and precast components are common candidates. The loads, ground support, exposure and joint strategy determine whether a fiber-reinforced solution is appropriate.
What must a designer check?
Compare the required residual strength, concrete properties, fiber test results, reinforcement details and project specification. Do not treat fiber weight per cubic metre alone as proof of equivalent structural capacity.
Frequently asked questions
Are macro and micro fibers interchangeable?
No. Macro fibers are generally assessed for post-crack behavior; micro fibers are commonly used to support plastic shrinkage crack control.
